Discovering and fulfilling your life purpose is your ultimate goal, because that’s what you’re here to do! …And for a very good reason.
This is probably the most exciting process – self-discovery. When you discover what you’re here to do your horizons open up and the way forward suddenly becomes clear. It’s like a breath of fresh air.
Most people are brought up to believe that they have to choose a job or career that first and foremost provides security and pays the bills. Straying from the conventional career choice is discouraged because it’s ‘not realistic’, ‘too risky’, ‘underpaid’ etc. etc. Not true!
So, let’s explore the exciting world of life purpose and how it is the superhighway to achieving fulfillment, happiness and abundance.
What is Life Purpose?
There are differing views as to what life purpose is. One view is that it is what you do – the job or career you are ‘called’ to. Another view is that it is who you are meant to be, or become, during the course of your life. We believe it is both, and we’ll explain this by looking at both aspects and how they interconnect.
Soul purpose is related to who you are as a spiritual being.
You have chosen to experience a physical life on planet Earth in order to have experiences that will enable you to grow on a spiritual level in specific areas.
Dan Millman’s book “The Life You Were Born to Live”* uses Pythagorean numerology based on your date of birth to identify your soul purpose (Dan calls it Life Purpose, we call it Soul Purpose). We’ve used Dan’s approach with all our clients and they have been amazed at how accurately it reflects their experiences and personal challenges. Try it!
Once you understand ‘why you are here’, the challenges you’ve faced, often repeatedly, start to make sense and give meaning to your life experiences. With a different perspective and an understanding of the significance of what has happened in the past, you can make different choices to create positive outcomes in the future, instead of repeating the same mistakes.
Ultimately, your soul purpose is to experience Love, Joy, Peace and Abundance (LJPA) and your experiences in this lifetime will be the catalysts for you to recognize and overcome your core issues that are getting in the way.
Our definition of life purpose is that it is what you are here to do; your life purpose steers you to ideal situations to provide ‘evolutionary catalysts’ for your spiritual growth – your soul purpose. In effect, your life purpose is the enabler for your soul purpose.
For some people, their life purpose is obvious to them at an early age. They know what they want to do in life. They want to be a doctor or a lawyer. They have a vocation.
For a large number of people the possibility doesn’t exist. They believe they are just here to make a living as best they can; to survive and save enough money to see them through retirement until they die. They go through job after job to make ends meet but carry with them a constant feeling of frustration; that something significant is missing from their life.
Understanding the concept of life purpose doesn’t necessarily mean you know what it is! It may be a mystery to you for years and you may only discover your purpose much later in life. I didn’t discover my life purpose until I was 54, and even now, 5 years later, I am still discovering its full meaning. There was a very good reason for that. I needed to have experiences that would prepare me for my life purpose and it was only when I reached the point of being ready that it was revealed to me.
One thing for sure is that your life purpose will be something you are passionate about and will use your natural talents.
Everything happens for a reason and everything you have experienced in your life to date is related to your life purpose, either directly if you’re already living it, or indirectly, as an apprenticeship to prepare you to fulfill it.
Soul Purpose and Life Purpose Symbiosis
Soul Purpose and Life Purpose work symbiotically; they are mutually supportive and beneficial. To fulfill your soul purpose and experience Love, Joy, Peace and Abundance you have to fulfill your life purpose. Your life purpose is something you Love and you experience Joy as you do it. You are at Peace because there is no inner conflict between what you are doing and what you are truly here to do. You experience Abundance because you receive rewards from the Universe for fulfilling what you’re here to do and for the contribution you are making to the world.
The Universe always supports you in fulfilling your purpose.
The challenges you face in life are ‘evolutionary catalysts’ and ‘course corrections’ to steer you in the right direction, and present you with the lessons you need to learn to facilitate your spiritual growth.
How to Discover Your Life Purpose
If you’re struggling to discover your life purpose, we have a simple exercise to help you.
Start by reviewing your life experiences and picking out recurring themes that point to what your purpose might be. Then make a list of your natural talents and see how those talents relate to the themes you’ve identified.
You may experience an Aha moment and find the answer immediately, or you may have to sit with it and play with different ideas. Sit quietly and ask the Universe “How can I serve?” – then wait for answers.
How do you know when you’ve discovered it?
You just KNOW – intuitively, deeply, with certainty.
…And Get Paid For It
This might seem obvious, but to get paid for it you have to DO it!
This doesn’t mean you have to leap off a cliff and change everything all at once, but it does mean getting clear on exactly what it means in practice and developing a plan to transition from what you’re doing now. Focus on the outcome, not the obstacles!
Your life purpose doesn’t have to be your livelihood. You may decide to fulfill it through volunteer work or as a hobby. Just make sure that the way you choose to fulfill it is a conscious empowered choice that feels right.
Now let’s look at the subject of payment. I expect you immediately thought about payment in terms of money! Money is only one form of energy exchange and your payment can come in many different forms and from multiple directions.
Payment is governed by the Universal Law of Giving and Receiving. Giving and receiving operates in an infinite cycle. You give your product or service and you receive your reward.
This can come in the form of money or payments ‘in kind’. It might come directly from the recipient or from another source. You can choose what is appropriate for each ‘transaction’. It can work in different ways at different times.
Yes, we all need money to live in this world, and money has a role to play, but NOT ALWAYS! You can negotiate forms of payment that remove the necessity for money by providing you with goods or services directly that you would otherwise have had to give money for.
When you work in alignment with the Universal Law of Giving and Receiving you have an energy of giving and the receiving part follows naturally. Focus on the product or service you are giving, and be open and flexible about how you receive your reward and you’ll be amazed how easily abundance flows to you.
