The concept of mindfulness has become increasingly popular, but what does it mean and what are the benefits?
Mindfulness means to live in the present moment and be ‘present’ with a keen awareness of yourself, your thoughts, your feelings, your surroundings, the current situation and the people around you. There are many benefits to developing mindfulness, but here are six benefits that have the most positive impact.
1) Becoming more connected with yourself
When you live mindfully in the moment, becoming more present in every moment, you become more aware of the connection between your mind and body. You become better in tune with what your body is trying to tell you with certain symptoms, become more aware of your emotions and how to handle them in a healthy fashion, you make conscious decisions to create your desired outcomes and so much more.
2) Having a better appreciation for beauty
When you slow down and deliberately try to live with mindfulness in the present, you notice your surroundings more, gaining a better appreciation of the beauty the world has to offer. Whether that beauty is in nature, human interaction, human or animal growth, whatever you find beautiful in this world you can gain a better appreciation for through deliberately taking time to admire and respect their beauty.
3) Getting more enjoyment out of life
Part of living with mindfulness is you start slowing down and taking time to enjoy the moment you’re in, your surroundings, and being fully present in the moment. This allows you to get more enjoyment out of your life by taking the time to enjoy every part of every moment. You’ll find yourself enjoying the little things you do in life much more because you’re slowing down and taking the time to appreciate them for all they have to offer.
4) Improving your self-awareness
While this is similar to the first benefit we mentioned, it isn’t quite the same. Self-awareness branches out further than just understanding what your body is trying to tell you at a given time. Self-awareness is understanding where you are in life, your mental state, your imperfections as well as your gifts and, most importantly, understanding and admitting when you’ve made a mistake so you can correct it and learn from it. By slowing down and living mindfully, you become more acutely aware of your actions and their immediate impact on other people; helping you to become a better person.
5) Improving your focus
Through practicing mindfulness, you’re taking steps to improve your ability to focus. You’re diligently and consciously trying to be fully present in every moment of your life, focusing on the specific details and occurrences of the present. Practicing this skill will not only make it easier, but it will also carry over to other areas of your life. By diligently practicing your focus, you’re enhancing your ability to focus on tasks and increasing the quality of the results you can achieve. You’ll notice an improvement in your ability to stay focused on your tasks and get them done with quality and efficiency.
6) It can help you become more easygoing
Mindfulness gives you a better understanding that life is ever-changing and that almost everything in this world is temporary. Whatever problem or struggle you face, no matter how great or difficult, will eventually be resolved one way or another. Everything will eventually pass. This understanding makes it easier to remain calm in challenging times and take the right action to resolve the situation.
Mindfulness has been proved to have major benefits – it makes life less stressful, it reduces or resolves conflict and overall it enables you to create a much higher level of success in your life. It enhances your relationships by improving communication and creating meaningful connections with the people in your life.
With practice, this can become a way of being that will totally transform your life in every way.
